Subject: Reason #817,694 to never check in any luggage....

Buenos tardes,

Yo soy en Cancun, Mexico, la primera vez estoy aqui...

oh sorry.

Greetings from Cancun! For those of you who haven't been here yet, you
should definitely make a dip here! I mean a trip here! Dip too... but
first make a trip here! I haven't seen ocean water this color outside
of Hawaii! The view of the turquoise water from the plane was fantastic
... and I'm staying in an "ocean view" room from where I can now see
the setting sun (my window faces north).

Wait, back up about 24 hours... my flight was supposed to be from San
Francisco-Miami at 8:50PM last night, then Miami to Cancun early this
morning. The inbound plane was coming from Saint Louis, and because of
all the weather problems in that part of the country right now, the
plane arrived in SFO at 12:20am!!! Well, it was diverted to Las Vegas
where it sat on the tarmac for a few hours before making it in to
SFO... why there I have no idea! But anyway, with all the constant
delaying of *MY* flight, I went up to the agent and asked for a
different flight... obviously I was going to miss my Miami-Cancun
connection!

She put me on the redeye flight from San Francisco to New York, then
Nueva York to Cancun this morning... But the inbound plane to SFO was
ALSO diverted to Phoenix and ended up being late arriving at SFO! By
the time we finally left the ground, it was past 1:00 AM (10:30pm
scheduled departure). New York then had almost-zero visibility this
morning and that further delayed the flight's arrival.... So the 2+
hours of connection time I was promised in JFK to go take a shower etc
was now 30 minutes... with the next JFK-Cancun flight departing after
8PM!

I HAD TO MAKE THIS CONNECTION! It was a sprint (ok, a jog... well maybe
more like run/walk/run/walk) to the connecting gate, and I got there
just as the flight was boarding.. I got in line to board and gave them
my boarding pass only to find out the next problem -- somebody had
already boarded with my seat assignment!

Well, this was a good thing. I got my upgrade confirmed on this flight
(wasn't expecting it since this was all arranged at the last minute) --
they gave me a new boarding pass and I got on the plane!

10:35 AM departure from Nueva York, 2:00 PM arrival time at Cancun this
afternoon!

In the end, I'm almost glad for all the flight delays. The seats on the
767 (SFO-JFK) recline almost-flat, while on the 757 (SFO-MIA) I would
have been on were just the "normal" seats... So I got a good night's
sleep and then got the upgrade on this morning too which was really a
pleasant surprise!! Gave me the opportunity to recharge my batteries!

Anyway, I got my rental car and drove to the "hotel zone" in Cancun
which is where I am right now... (somebody remind me to write about
driving in Mexico in tomorrow's email). I'm about to go out to dinner,
will probably be too tired/high on sugar/drunk(?) to send any mail
after that, so taking care of all that business right now! BTW my hotel
room doesn't JUST have the ocean view but it's also larger than the
entire top floor of my house! Not bad at all for what I'm paying for
it! And it includes cocktails from 6-8pm...

Okay... I've taken a few pictures so far today and they'll be up on my
site probably tomorrow morning. Tomorrow its off to see the Mayan ruins
at Chechen Itza and/or Uxmal and/or Tulum..

Over there. But not right now :)

So until manana... adios y muchas gracias tambien... (Parixit, I'll
assume your offer from june 6, 2007 of "free cakes and desserts" is
valid today too, especially since I only had ONE on that day...)

-yo.
