Subject: "they call me the wanderer"... Breakfast outside Regensburg, Lunch near Wurzburg, Dinner at Hamburg...
Date: Saturday, November 29, 2008 10:03 AM

Guten abend (again),

This is my first email sent from a train. I'm zooming along at 200 km/h in Northern Germany, while connected to the wi-fi hotspot on the train... and sitting inside a private compartment with 1 hour to the next stop...

The day started out with my legs very sore from about the 10-12 km of walking I had done yesterday. So I thought I'd take it easy by doing the wandering by train thing. I really wasn't looking forward to dragging my bag all the way back from the hotel to the train station, but it turned out to be quite nice... a morning stroll through some very empty streets -- Passau apparantly doesn't wake up until the afternoon!

I got on the 11:02am train to Regensburg, walking the two 1st class coaches trying to see what seats are unreserved and whether they have clean windows. Well, none of them had clean windows but I found a 4-seater compartment all to myself with no reservation tags outside. Great, this was my home for the next 4-5 hours.

Breakfast (2 bananas from the grocery store last night) was just before the Regensburg stop. I didn't get off at Regensburg, I was enjoying the journey too much! The train continued on to Nurnberg and Wurzburg, and I finally got off at Wurzburg. It was about 3pm and I was thinking about going to Cologne to roam around there for a bit. But then I saw the sign on the opposite platform -- "Kessel Hannover Hamburg". oooh Hamburg -- I'd never been there before!

Took lunch to-go from one of the vendors on the platform, and got on the train to Hamburg. Ironically the train I was on before was also going to Hamburg.... oh well. I got on the ICE train, had my lunch in a car shared by only me and 2 other business people all the way to Hamburg, while listening to my roadtrips collection on the iphone. The battery on the phone was dead by the time the train pulled into Hamburg -- 17:55. I'm now charging it through the laptop.

Once I reached Hamburg it was time to get back to Frankfurt for my flight tomorrow morning... So I got on THIS train, did the same thing -- found a compartment all to myself, realized that I had forgotten my Germany electrical adapter plug (along with my camera battery charger and 1 battery) in the hotel in Passau, and powered on my laptop to connect to the wi-fi available in this cabin (already paid for at the hotel in Passau last night on a t-mobile plan -- so might as well put my money to good use! I'll be using it in Frankfurt too.)

So dinner was also "to-go" at a hot dog stand (SHHHH -- NO COMMENTS ON THAT ONE!) and I got on the 18:24 train to Karlsruhe (with a stop in Frankfurt where I will definitely be getting off this time -- that is the only "planned" part of this whole day).

Thats all until the next international trip (which will not be in December/January) .. I've got some pictures from today but haven't uploaded them yet. Just yesterday's pics are on the website.

Time now for the Haselnuss-Schnitten Schokolade (chocolate wafers).

Auf wienerschnitzel,
-me.
